New 50-acre rail yard required 500,000 cy of excavation and grading including approximately 100,000 cy placement, monitoring and removal of surcharge for compression and consolidation of substrata, 16,000 lf track removals, 43,000 lf of new mainline and yard tracks with 7,000 lf guardrail, 66 turnouts, 41,000 lf contact rail, 5,000 lf of piles to support 500 cy of concrete foundations for aerial walkway, 16,000 lf storm/sanitary pipe, 95 manholes, 12,000 lf water lines, 2,000 lf waterfront steel sheeting with 210 – 60-foot deep tieback anchors, 60,000 lf electrical conduits, 16,000 lf signal channel with 20 structures, 200 lf 18-inch jacking sleeve under Amtrak's Northeast Corridor and 10 support buildings. Project schedule required 4,000 lf mainline to be constructed and placed into service within three months of NTP. Ten track tie-ins to existing system required weekend construction and shifting 5,200 lf of mainline. Start of construction 09/1988 – completion 12/1991. |
