NJDOT - Route 78 Truck Weigh and Inspection Stations

This project included the construction of two truck weigh stations and inspection facilities adjacent to Exit 6 on Route 78.  Each of these facilities will be located on a 30+/- acre site on the eastbound and westbound roadways.  In addition to the stations, the project included the reconstruction of three bridges along with re-profiling and widening approximately 1-3/4 miles of Route 78.  Major construction items performed included 1.2 million cy of roadway excavation – including 1 million cy of cut-to-waste and 140,000 cy of rock excavation, placement of 46,000 cy of concrete in pavement and bridge structures; placement of 1-3/4 miles of superpave material along east and westbound lanes, installation of sheeting, cofferdams and steel H piles, installation of 90 +/- acres of roadway drainage, completion of site and roadway lighting, installation of 15 sign structures, and placement of 30+/- acres of landscaping.  The weigh and inspection system are comprised of both local and remote Weigh in Motion Systems (WIMs) that report back to a local control facility.  This was accomplished though a series of lights, signs and roadway sensors.  The site has a CCTV system installed allowing for remote operation and visual confirmation of vehicle presence at the remote and local sites.  The facility is equipped with a complete communication network with fiber optic and copper back bone, a video surveillance system and two-way communication system.
