Secaucus, Hudson County, NJ - Excavation of earth and rock embankment
- Construction of 2 E-ZPass lanes with toll islands and canopy
- Extension of concrete walkway tunnel
- Drainage system and highway lighting upgrades
- Construction of concrete pavement, concrete fascia wall and concrete barrier curb
Construction included the removal of 17,500 cubic yards of soil and 8,900 cubic yards of rock as part of this Interchange 16E/18E toll plaza widening project. The addition of two southbound E-ZPass lanes required a 45 ft. extension of the existing concrete walkway tunnel, including mechanical and electrical systems, constructed while maintaining the existing systems. The 1,500 ft. reinforced concrete culvert pipe drainage system consisted of 21 inlets or manholes and 2 water quality chambers, installed in a trench excavated through rock. The sandstone with imbedded shale rock was predrilled utilizing three hydraulic drill rigs and shattered with an 8,000 lb hydraulic hammer. Improved plaza lighting was provided by high mast lights constructed on rock drilled shaft foundations, while maintaining the existing tower lights. A concrete fascia wall and barrier curb was constructed along the length of the rock face. The two toll lanes and islands were complimented with new roof canopy. |
