Partial demolition and modification of existing toll plaza lanes, islands, booths and canopy; construction of two express E-Z pass lanes in both north and southbound directions; construction of precast concrete tunnel across the toll plaza; construction of new pavement, pavement milling and resurfacing; construction of concrete foundations and drilled shafts for sign support structures and a space frame; drainage structure improvements, fabrication and erection of overhead sign support structures and a space frame; construction of a median. The most unique aspect of this project was its end-date driven schedule. At bid, several items of work were not fully developed and there was a constant stream of changes of plans throughout the course of work. Many of these changes were discussed and developed on-site with the design team, NJ Turnpike Authority representatives, the resident engineer and RCC field management as the work was progressing. Although there were very significant changes made, it was critical that the original final completion date be kept. In addition to maintaining final completion dates, work also took place throughout the summer months with very heavy traffic volumes. We were able to complete the project with very little interference peak travel periods. |
