MOTIVA – Railcar Rack Expansion Providence
- Ethanol transfer facility
- Install precast bridge structure – 30± x 90±
- Lightweight concrete fill for geotechnical stability
- Trackwork – ballasted and direct fixed
- Concrete work – track slab, walkway supports, collection system trench
- Site utilities – grading & drainage
- Spill containment collection system
The work involved the construction of a Railcar Transfer Facility for MOTIVA. The project site is located along the P&W tracks in Providence, RI. The purpose of the facility is to transfer ethanol from rail tank cars to MOTIVA storage tanks within their facility.
The facility will enable MOTIVA to unload 40 tank cars at one time by providing a transfer area that will accommodate 20 railcars and an adjacent track storage area that will hold an additional 80+/- cars.
The transfer area consists of two tracks constructed 24 feet apart by 620 feet long. The structure is centered between the tracks has a 4 +/- foot reinforced concrete trench located between the tracks to house the piping system that will transfer the ethanol from the railcars to the storage tanks.
In addition to the work associated with the unloading rack, the project included the placement of 4,000 CY of lightweight concrete fill to minimize future settlement of the loading area. The area included a HDPE Liner and spill containment collection system that was installed under the tracks and loading rack.
A Precast Bridge Structure was included in the project to allow the lead track to cross a 42” pre-stressed concrete water main that serviced the City of East Providence.
Start of Construction October 2006 - Completion March 2007.
