MOTIVA – Railcar Rack Expansion Sewaren

New Jersey

• Ethanol transfer facility
• Trackwork – ballasted and direct fixed
• Concrete work – track slab, walkway supports, collection system trench
• Site utilities – grading & drainage
• Spill containment collection system

The work involved the construction of a Railcar Transfer Facility for MOTIVA.  The project site is located along the Conrail tracks in Sewaren, NJ.  The purpose of the facility is to transfer ethanol from rail tank cars to MOTIVA storage tanks within their facility.  The ethanol is to be used as a gasoline additive throughout New Jersey and New York.
The facility will enable MOTIVA to unload 40 tank cars at one time by providing a transfer area that will accommodate 20 railcars and a track storage area that will hold an additional 20 cars.
The transfer area consists of two tracks constructed on a reinforced concrete containment slab approximately 40 feet wide by 620 feet long.  The structure has a 4 +/- foot trench located between the tracks to house the piping system that will transfer the ethanol from the railcars to the storage tanks.
In addition to the work associated with the containment slab, the project included the construction of approximately 3,000 feet of ballasted track that ties into the existing Conrail track.  Approximately 1240 feet of direct fixed track was installed on the containment slab.

The project was substantially complete ten (10) days ahead of schedule.  Start of construction 08/2004 - completion 11/2004.
