Manville, NJ

• Infrastructure improvement
• Aggressive schedule with tight work windows
• High quality product delivered safely
Railroad Construction Co. Inc performed capacity upgrades to a vital link to the Northern Jersey Rail Infrastructure system. Port Reading Junction, located in Manville NJ, is a point where parent railroads Norfolk Southern Corporation and CSX Transportation enter the Conrail System. This point presently sees 40 trains per day hauling goods for delivery to the Tri-State Area and beyond via the Port system.
The project eliminated an operations bottleneck and curtailed idle emissions by increasing capacity from 1 track to multiple tracks throughout the length of Port Reading Junction Interlocking. 4 No. 20 Crossovers will be installed on the project along with 2 No. 20 Single Turnouts. 2400’ of new track will be built on ballast pads. Reconfiguration of the interlocking requires the installation of 1200 ties and 30 insulated joints.
All construction was in a heavy density train area with only select outages for major items. Crossovers and turnouts were installed during these track outage windows. A large amount of work occurred during these tight windows so as not to delay important train operations. The project was completed in early April of 2009 on time with a multi-million dollar budget.
