Work consisted of rehabilitation of the North Tunnel and installation of smoke evacuation fans in the South tunnel on New Jersey Transit’s Hoboken Division, as well as the installation of new substations, medium voltage cabling, power and control cabling, tunnel lighting, telephone and radio equipment, and catenary supports.
Electrical work included the removal of existing pipe and wire and the installation of temporary power during the phasing of the two tunnels.  Preliminary work began in the South Tunnel in June 2001 for approximately four weeks to support the GC’s activities.  Work included the installation of new (1MVA) transformers with double-ended switch gear rated at 1600 amps, 480 volt; medium voltage wiring (27kV and 14kV), 14 smoke evacuation fans in each tunnel, supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system, radio and telephone equipment, tunnel lighting (fixtures and wiring), catenary supports, grounding system, and empty conduits to support the future installation of New Jersey Transit’s signal system.
