Hofstra University East Pedestrian Bridge

Hempstead, NY - Design/Build of Pedestrian Bridge
- 200 foot clear span truss
- 2 elevators housed in glass enclosed towers
- Bridge supported by two buildings
- Pre-assembled on site and placed in 8 hours
The project consisted of the design and construction of a pedestrian bridge for easy access and mobility for all members of the University (spanning Hempstead Turnpike). The bridge was a 200-foot clear span truss, designed and fabricated by Continental Bridge, approximately 14 by 19-feet wide, providing an interior clear width of 15 feet. The interior bridge finish included drywall in the upper wall section and tinted glass on the lower section. The exterior face consisted of composite textured panels manufactured by Petrarch. Ventilation consisted of a continuous 15-inch high louver below the glass for the length of the bridge and roof-mounted exhaust fans. The two buildings, which support the bridge, are almost mirror copies of each other. These steel-framed buildings have a drywall interior and Petrarch panel exterior. Two hydraulic elevators are housed in glass-enclosed towers. The stairways are constructed of tubular steel with welded joints. The bridge was pre-assembled outside of the roadway limits and then lifted into place during one eight-hour complete roadway shutdown. |
